The Black Tulip

The book is about Cornelius Van Baerle, he loves flowers and specially tulips, they were all very beautiful. And one day he saw a notice to all tulip growers that now they had there chance to show that they could win a 100 000 guilders, but first they have to grow a completely black tulip, and that would also be the first in the country. Cornelius is twenty-five years old, and very smart and he lives in the town Dort.

His neighbour Isaac Boxtel didn't like Cornelius, he was jealous of him. He always asked himself why Cornelius grow tulips, he was a scientist and very rich and he didn't needed the money. Isaac was the best tulip-grower in Dort, he also wanted the price he thought he was a poor man and needed the money more than Cornelius did. But Cornelius plan was to give poor people in Dort half of the money (50 000 guilders) and the rest to go travel the world to find new tulips.
Isaac had a thin face and white hair.

The book is written by Alexandre Dumas, he has also written The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers. He was born 24 July 1802 and died 5 December 1870.)
